Overview

Non-technical skills (situation awareness, decision making, leadership, communication and teamwork) are essential for safe surgical care, yet these skills are rarely taught or formally assessed. This interactive course will draw together the current state of the art in non-technical skills education for operating room (OR) team members and demonstrate why every clinician who is passionate about maintaining high performance needs to be engaged in this topic. The aim of the course is to equip you with the tools, technologies and expertise to improve your own non-technical skills, work effectively in operating room teams, handle challenging situations in the operating room, and build a program at your institution to teach others these critical skills. This interactive course will engage participants from different perspectives on non-technical skills education; short didactic sessions to learn the science and psychology of OR team behavior, video analysis to identify and reflect on non-technical skills in the operating room, small group discussion for peer learning, hands-on experience with assessment tools, and discussion panels with thought leaders. The highlight of the course is a unique opportunity to participate in a fully immersive simulated operation and be coached on your non-technical skills during an after-action debrief by internationally-renowned experts and thought leaders in the field. The course will then turn to focus on realistic interventions that can improve non-technical skills in the operating room. Participants will leave the course with perspectives and tools for continual personal improvement in operating room performance and an implementation plan to surmount local barriers in their own institution.
