The International Structural Acupuncture Course for Physicians: A Palpation Based Approach

Monday, September 11, 2017 – Monday, May 21, 2018

Royal Sonesta Boston
Cambridge, Massachusetts

This unique course provides a practical exposure to both the science and practice of acupuncture. With the publication of the NIH Consensus statement in 1997, there has been a growing interest in the academic and clinical arena about the potential applications of acupuncture for pain control and other medical conditions. The formation of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the growing funding opportunities that this provides researchers in the field highlights the need for physicians interested in acupuncture to have a solid grounding in both clinical methods and research design. The course is designed to bridge the gap for physicians, dentists, chiropractors and licensed acupuncturists between acupuncture practice and science. Current theories of the neuromodulatory and humeral effect of acupuncture will be discussed and the clinical literature will be presented while participants learn the theory and practice of acupuncture for the duration of this year-long course. Emphasis will be on pointing out the limitations of our current knowledge and the need for better research design. Recent advances in understanding the basis of acupuncture neuromodulation using functional magnetic imaging will be presented as well.

The course will provide 304.50 hours of continuing education hours over a 9-month period with 6 hours per week of web-based didactic sessions and video demonstrations and 5 live, intensive weekend workshops with hands on sessions. Of the 304.50 hours, 186 hours will focus on the theory and science of acupuncture and 118.50 hours will involve live, clinical experience.
