School Mental Health: Treating Students K-12

As we emerge from the pandemic and schools return to in-person learning, clinicians and educators will need to address its many effects on the mental health of children in the evolving ‘new normal’ school environment. This course will equip participants with up-to-date knowledge and skills to enhance the emotional well-being of children and adolescents at school.

Topics will encompass fostering open communication around racial diversity and gender/sexuality, preventive strategies for substance abuse and suicide, pharmacotherapy for mental health disorders, interactive case studies in school safety assessment and cognitive processing speed, engaging youth via healing-centered and performance psychology skills, and applying lessons from family therapy with challenging families. The emphasis is on practical and timely clinical information and skills based on emerging research, evidence-based practices, and innovative learning strategies.

Mental health and health clinicians, educators, school administrators, researchers, and others interested in the development and treatment of school-aged children and adolescents will gain updated knowledge and skills via a mix of didactic lectures, case studies, panel discussions and Q&A.
