The Fredric G. Levin Lung Cancer Symposium

The dynamics of lung cancer treatment are changing as our understanding of the unique biology of the disease improves. Despite the establishment of evidence-based guidelines, significant variation exists in the management of lung nodules. A recent study demonstrated that up to 44.7% of patients received care inconsistent with guidelines, resulting in both over-evaluation and under-evaluation. Our course will outline the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s (NCCN) accepted guidelines, and highlight updates to staging, treatment and indications for neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy. In addition to providing vital updates in perioperative care, the course will also offer general topical lectures regarding the role of immunotherapy in treating lung cancer patients, and will supplement didactic material with hands-on sessions to support and improve attendees’ technical skills.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review the guidelines established by the Fleischner Society and American College of Chest Physicians regarding the evaluation and management of pulmonary nodules
  • Identify the spectrum of radiologic appearance of pulmonary nodules and the range of differential diagnoses that may guide the choice of imaging
  • Analyze the current role of strategies for lung cancer diagnosis and staging
  • Evaluate the advantages and limitations of limited resection for early stage lung cancer
  • Determine the various approaches to minimally invasive pulmonary resection
  • Analyze the technical challenges and results of extended pulmonary resection
  • Assess the current role of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in the management of early stage non–small cell lung cancer
  • Utilize state-of-the-art tools to diagnose and stage lung cancer
  • Demonstrate the use of new treatment technologies
  • Review new research related to pulmonary nodules and lung cancer
