Updates and Innovations in Geriatric Mental Health

This course will explore treatment challenges and perspectives for our aging population. There is a gap between what clinicians have been taught during training and recent findings on the trajectory of aging in our society. As a result, clinicians need to be updated on the latest advances in order to best serve the needs of their patients. By understanding the dynamics of the aging process clinicians will improve their competence and their ability to treat patients from mid-life to older age. The interactive educational format will consist of case studies, panel discussions, and individual lectures with questions and answers. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify types of dementia and recognize important parts of the disease process such as ethical dilemmas, caregiver burnout, and palliative care;
  • Identify steps for achieving successful aging, including mind/body techniques and mindfulness meditation; determine the psychotherapeutic needs of patients who are depressed, hoarders, physically ill, and/or who are in physical pain;
  • Offer suggestions for working with different types of problems including sexual issues, grief and bereavement, and substance use disorders and;
  • Develop strategies to handle end of life questions and legal issues.

Target Audience

This course is targeted to Primary Care Physicians, Specialty Physicians, Nurses, Psychologists and Social Workers. This course may also be of interest to physicians who practice in Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Neurology, Psychology and Mental Health.
